Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS) works with over 2,500 volunteers. Most are Bigs – individuals who dedicate their time to change the life of a child. But a small group of Bigs have found a fun way to strengthen their involvement with BBBS: the Young Professionals Group (YPG).
The YPG Board is a group of 11 volunteers, many of whom are also Bigs, who plan events to increase awareness of BBBS among young professionals in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Social events like happy hours, Timberwolves games, brewery tours and ice skating bring a diverse group of young professionals together several times each year.
“Our events are a chance for young professionals to network and have fun, while at the same time helping build a strong community of supporters for BBBS,” says Christa Sitzmann, Chair of the YPG Board. “Young professionals are the future leaders of our community. and we want to help them get engaged with the agency early.”
The YPG hosts six to seven events each year, which are all open to anyone and everyone. Next up is a happy hour at 612 Brew in Northeast Minneapolis on August 20. In addition to socializing, this event will include a raffle for registration for two people to BBBS’ Big Little 5K in September. The event is free to attend, and anyone with the YPG will save $1 on all of 612’s craft beers.
