Each month, Big Brothers Big Sisters recognizes one outstanding Big for a strong commitment to his or her Little and to our overall mentoring mission. Read about how these Bigs connect with their Littles, what they talk about with their matches and how they overcome challenges while growing in their mentor friendships.
The match between Trisha and Lashaya is yet another example of a lasting, meaningful friendship sparked through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities. The two were first matched six years ago. Since that initial meeting, they have enjoyed doing a variety of activities together, including many agency-sponsored outings. Trisha and Lashaya recently participated in the Federated Challenge and last year they signed up for the Talent Showcase at Mall of America. Trisha spent months helping Lashaya prepare, and the pay off was a stirring singing performance in front of an audience of event attendees and mall-goers.
Whenever talking to Trisha about her match, she always stresses the impact Lashaya has had on her rather than focus on how she has influenced her Little Sister. Trisha believes she is a better person as a result of their match. She says, among other things, she has learned to keep a grateful, positive spirit and has been more open to going new places and trying new experiences that she otherwise would have skipped.
Trisha admires her Little Sister’s ability to look on the bright side and maintain a positive attitude no matter what the circumstances. She also loves her sense of humor, kind heart, artistic abilities and friendly personality. She has witnessed Lashaya mature over the course of their friendship, noting that she has become more outspoken and assertive — qualities that Trisha knows will benefit Lashaya in the future.
Trisha urges other adults to volunteer as a mentor. “I would tell someone who was thinking of becoming a Big that it is a great decision. I have loved spending time with Lashaya and the organization is incredible,” she says. “BBBS works really hard to match you with someone who has common interests so you don’t have to worry about getting along- they make it easy!”
She credits her six year relationship with Lashaya for helping her gain a new perspective.
“My favorite part of being a Big is seeing the world through Lashaya’s eyes. It makes me think less about myself, and my own worries. Getting to have fun, while being enriched by, and enriching a young person at the same time is a win win!”
