‘Tis the season for runners, bikers and walkers to crowd the streets and sidewalks. Minnesotans are venturing into the great outdoors to take advantage of another beautiful summer. And while there are plenty of ways to get the outdoor fitness fix, it’s clearly the season for 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and full marathons. Almost every weekend you can find a run or a walk in the Twin Cities area. There are fun runs, walks and runs for causes and just straight up fitness challenges.
This year, for the first time, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities is presenting our very own 5K, Little Steps for Big Reasons.
Why a 5K? Our cause is no different than those directly related to major health and wellness causes. We know that the investment we make in our children through mentoring contributes to the overall health and wellbeing of our community, and our goal is to raise awareness and support for that empowering work.
Little Steps for Big Reasons will take place in Coon Rapids- in the heart of a community that has a particular need for male mentors. Anoka County itself has nearly a hundred children waiting for the connection and friendship a Big Brother or Sister can give. Some have been waiting too long. We’re running to change that. We’re running because our vision is to give a mentor to every child who wants or needs one.
Positive mentors are so influential in keeping children on the right path. As the most thoroughly evaluated mentoring model in the nation, we have countless statistics to support the claim that mentoring actually has the power to change lives and generational cycles. But you don’t need numbers. You only need to think for a moment about those influential friends, coaches and teachers who were willing to provide that extra measure of attention and encouragement to you along the way.
Help us recruit male volunteers and raise awareness about the children waiting for mentors. Join our cause, and support our programs by running in or volunteering at Little Steps for Big Reasons.
More information about our event and about registration is available on our website www.bigstwincities.org.
